The growth of giant pumpkins: How extreme weight influences shape

چکیده
Great morphological differences exist among fruits and vegetables. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we predict pumpkin shape evolution and maximum size based on their material properties. Using time-lapse photography and measurements collected by volunteer farmers, we show that as pumpkins grow, they morph from spherical to pancake shapes, flattening up to 50% in height-towidth aspect ratio. By compressing whole pumpkins in material-testing machines, we find that the elastic response of the pumpkin is insufficient to account for the large deformations characteristic of large pumpkins. We hypothesize that pumpkin flattening is caused by the weight of the pumpkin retarding its normal growth processes. We test this hypothesis using a mathematical model that assumes plant growth is stimulated in response to a tensile yield stress. We are able to predict pumpkin shapes consistent with those observed. The observed growth plasticity allows the fruit to redistribute internal stresses, thereby growing to extreme sizes without breaking. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The making of giant pumpkins: how selective breeding changed the phloem of Cucurbita maxima from source to sink.
Despite the success of breeding programmes focused on increasing fruit size, relatively little is known about the anatomical and physiological changes required to increase reproductive allocation. To address this gap in knowledge, we compared fruit/ovary anatomy, vascular structure and phloem transport of two varieties of giant pumpkins, and their smaller fruited progenitor under controlled env...
متن کاملOtolith shape variability and associated body growth differences in giant grenadier, Albatrossia pectoralis
Fish stocks can be defined by differences in their distribution, life history, and genetics. Managing fish based on stock structure is integral to successful management of a species because fishing may affect stocks disproportionately. Genetic and environmental differences can affect the shape and growth of otoliths and these differences may be indicative of stock structure. To investigate the ...

Giant condylomata are not usually seen nowadays in developed nations, but such cases are still seen in the under-resourced countries. Condylomata acuminata are commonly transmitted through sexual intercourse. Generally diagnosed based on their appearance. Giant condyloma acuminata also named Buschke- Löwenstein tumour (BLT) is a slow growing cauliflower-like tumor, locally aggressive and destru...

This research evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of commercial Bactocell and D-Pro probiotics on growth performance, survival and carcass composition in giant freshwater prawn Marcrobrachium rosenbergii postlarvae (PL) in a 60 day feeding trial. A total of 600 PLs with mean initial weight of 0.090± 0.004 g were assigned to five treatments each with three replicates in a completely...

The logistic, Gompertz, Richards and asymmetric logistic growth curve models were fitted to body weight data of local Ghanaian chickens and French SASSO T44 chickens. All four growth models provided good fit for each sex by genotype growth data with R2 values ranging from 86.7% to 96.7%. The rate constant parameter, k, ranged between 0.137 and 0.271 and were significantly different from zero fo...
